Two studies show that a single session in an indoor tanning booth increases the risk of melanoma by 20 %, and ech additioal sesion increases this risk by an additionl 2 %; in addition, those who begin artificial tanning before the age of 35 increase their melanoma risk by 90 %.
These studies also showed that a single session in a tanning booth increases the odds of deveoping squamous cell carcinoma by 67%, and basal cll carcinoma by 29%.
How lucky do you feel?
An October article in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology provides molecular evidence that the light emitted by tanning beds cause skin cancer. Cyclobutane thymidine dimers, a DNA mutation, were present in the deep epidermis after a single exposure to UV1 radiation, which is the type emitted by tanning beds.
This also supports the recommendation for truly broad-spectrum sunscreens to prevent skin cancer, since most sunscreens only prevent UVB radiation from damaging DNA.
There is a troubling new wrinkle in melanoma epidemiology: An appreciable blip in cases that first appeared about 10 years ago in American women aged 30-34 has been attributed to an increased use of tanning salons among teenage girls that started in the 1980s. I cannot emphasize strongly enough how important it is to stay away from tanning beds!

Please contact your NYS senators and ask them to support legislation limiting teen visits to tanning booths. 14 to 18 year olds currently can visit booths with parental permission. Yet using tanning booths prior to the age of 30 has been proven to increase one's risk for melanoma by 75 PER CENT!! I have seen pateints die from melanoma in their 30's who used tanning booths in their teens. Please do your part to help teenagers who just may not know better. I just read a shocking set of statistics, which I would like to share with you. A recent online surveys of more than 3800 white, non-Hispanic females aged 14 to 22 years found the 81 percent of respondents had tanned outdoors frequently or occasionally during the last year, while more than 32% had used a tanning bed, 25% at least weekly! There is an epidemic of melanoma in the US and worldwide, and this kind of tanning will undoubtably lead to more skin cancers as well as deaths from melanoma.
