A small number of studies support the intriguing idea that probiotics applied to the skin or ingested may help acne and rosacea. We already know that the proper complement of gut bacteria can help in the normal function of the gut; we also know that gut bacteria can help in many inflammatory conditions of the body. The normal flora of the gut is disturbed by taking antibiotics, and can lead to numerous inflammatory states of the body.  Oral probiotics have been shown to regulate the release of inflammatory cytokines within the skin and improve insulin sensitivity.  Researchers are now focusing on developing topical forms of probiotics for patients with inflammatory conditions of the skin.  This could reduce our dependence on topical and oral antibiotics for these conditions.
