For people under 65 years of age, a diet high in animal proteins was associated with a higher mortality rate and more cancers. A diet high in plant-based proteins was still associated with higher cancer mortality, but not higher overall mortality. The typical American diet is very high in protein, especially animal proteins, much more than what one consumes in Asian countries, or say, on the Mediterranean diet. The message seems to be: eat your meat and fish but keep the protein from animal sources below 10 to 20% of the total calories per day; don't overdo the nuts, beans, and legumes, fill up on vegetables, and eat healthy fats such as olive oil, macedamia nut oil, and avocados.
