What is KYBELLA and who should consider having this treatment?
KYBELLA is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), commonly referred to as the “double chin.” Many patients have fullness in this area due to excess fat, either hereditary or due to excess weight. Whatever the cause, KYBELLA can be injected under the chin in a series of treatments depending upon the amount of fat present. Typically, patients receive two to four treatments about five to six weeks apart. Kybella has also been used as an off-label treatment for fat in other areas, such as the knees or bra tops, or for lipomas.
What are the active ingredients in KYBELLA?
The active ingredient of KYBELLA is deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally-occurring substance present in your blood and gallbladder which the body needs to be able to digest fat.
Who should not receive KYBELLA?
You should not receive KYBELLA if you have an active infection in the treatment area, or if you are pregnant on the day of the treatment.
How will I receive KYBELLA?
KYBELLA is injected into the fat under your chin, typically via 15 to 20 but up to 50 injections under your skin by Dr. Clark using a tiny needle that causes minimal stinging.
Is it painful to receive a KYBELLA treatment?
Dr. Clark will discuss with you whether you would like to have the area numbed with lidocaine prior to the injections. The injections themselves are barely felt by the typical patient, but topical or injectable lidocaine can minimize or completely prevent discomfort that otherwise might occur as KYBELLA is working on the fat cells for several minutes after the injection.
What are the possible side effects of KYBELLA?
The most common side effects include:
- swelling around the immediate injection area which can range from two days up to two weeks.
- bruising
- initial pain or stinging at injection site
- redness
- areas of firmness which eventually subside
Serious but uncommon side effects, which are made unlikely by careful mapping and injection technique, include:
- nerve injury to the jaw that can temporarily cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness.
- a feeling of fullness when swallowing due to more significant swelling with higher volumes of fat treated at higher doses, which improves quickly as the swelling resolves.
Dr. Clark has developed an antiswelling kit with a ice pack, compression strap, supplements and medications that will be provided to you both before and after the treatment at no additional cost to you. She has found that this kit, along with an icing protocol, greatly minimizes any swelling, previously the only complaint of her patients about the procedure. Patients feel their swelling lasts for 3 days, although more subtle swelling can be present for 2 weeks or more after a treatment.
What is important for my doctor to know about me if I am considering KYBELLA?
Before receiving KYBELLA, inform Dr. Clark about all of your medical conditions, including if you:
- have had or plan on having surgery on your face, neck, or chin
- have had cosmetic treatments on your face, neck, or chin
- have had or currently have medical conditions on or near the neck area
- have had or are having trouble swallowing
- have bleeding problems
- are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
- are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
- have any history of cold sores or herpes in the area to be treated or nearby
Additionally, tell Dr. Clark about all medicines such as herbal supplements, vitamins, over-the-counter and prescription medications especially anticoagulants (used for prevention of blood clotting) you are taking or plan to take within the treatment timeframe.
Why should I choose Dr. Clark to administer my KYBELLA?
At The Center for Aesthetic and Preventative Dermatology, Dr. Clark has made a commitment that every patient will receive only treatments that have been proven to be safe and effective, and to administer those treatments ethically according to the highest medical and surgical standards. She has developed a unique protocol to minimize the swelling that occurs with a KYBELLA treatment, based on clinical research findings and her experience with patients and her staff as well as her experience with KYBELLA. This protocol is not available at any other practice. She has also developed a protocol for minimizing or eliminate the treatment discomfort of KYBELLA injections while also reducing any risks to the patient of the procedure. You will receive a kit with everything you need and detailed instructions to manage the post-treatment period.
Dr. Clark has more than 30 years’ experience as a dermatologist and maintains a keen interest in the knowledge of the anatomy of the face and neck areas, which is essential to a successful outcome with KYBELLA. She will conduct a thorough pre-treatment evaluation including ruling out causes of submental fullness other than preplatysmal fat to ensure that KYBELLA is right for you.
We look forward to seeing you soon so you can take the first step toward saying “goodbye” to your double chin forever!
